Workshop Objectives
|
|
The primary objective of the workshop is to identify learning science findings and technologies to help the Army train Soldiers and grow leaders for today and tomorrow. The major objectives include the following:
- Accelerate learning while maintaining effectiveness by
incorporating principles and methods from the science of learning
- leveraging learning technologies
- rapidly inserting lessons learned into training and leader development
- Minimize resource requirements (time, cost, people) by
- streamlining time in institutional training and education
- accelerating leader development
- choosing technology-based solutions based on learning effectiveness
- Minimize impacts on
- relationships (personal, professional, unit cohesion)
- quality of life
In addition to a plenary session with keynote presentations, four working groups will address issues concerning learning models, training soldiers, developing leaders, and future capabilities.

|
| Learning Model |
|
| |
|
This working group will examine learning models of other large-scale institutions (e.g., Navy, universities) and corporations for best practices and lessons learned that could be applicable for an Army learning model. Sample ” Learning Model ” questions to be addressed:
- What are some of the key characteristics that affect how Soldiers learn?
- What combination of instructional strategies and technologies are generally the most effective and efficient (less time, fewer people)?
- What learning model best fits the needs of the Soldier in a life-long learning environment?

| Train Soldiers |
|
| |
|
This working group will examine the reshaping of the Army's training and education system. We will focus on how advances in the science of learning have provided new pedagogical techniques, procedures, and technologies which can be used to offset pending schoolhouse resource reductions. Sample "Train Soldiers " questions to be addressed :
- What learning/training strategies could be employed to maintain objectives but possibly streamline courses?
- What are the critical factors required for effective learning to take place in simulated environments (e.g., games, virtual environments)?
- What are the impacts of new training technologies on instructors and student learning?
- What strategies can help ensure relevant and effective training for instructors and students?
- How does one determine measures of effectiveness and quality?
- What are some potential effects of Army transformation (e.g., ARFORGEN, modularity) on training?

| Develop Leaders |
|
| |
|
For several years the Army has explicitly recognized the need to develop self-aware, adaptive leaders who can effectively operate in a broad range of situations across the full spectrum of operations. This working group will examine what we know about “adaptability”, and will explore possible strategies for accelerating the growth of key leader skills which are thought to support adaptability. We will also discuss some of the organizational factors (socialization, cohesion) which help to establish the climate within which adaptable leaders perform. Sample “Develop Leaders” questions to be addressed:
- What are the characteristics of adaptive individuals and leaders?
- Are there existing models for developing adaptive leaders?
- What measures predict adaptability?
- What are some strategies to accelerate growth in these areas:
- critical thinking and decision making
- interpersonal skills
- building and leading teams
- How does one determine measures of effectiveness and quality?
- What is the balance between developing individual competencies and personal and professional relationships?

Future Capabilities |
|
| |
|
This working group will envision what learning science and emerging technologies will offer within the next decade and articulate how the Army might advantage both to train Soldiers and grow leaders more effectively. Sample “Future Capabilities” questions to be addressed:
- How can training, leader development, and self development be managed as one integrated system across a Soldier's career and in a variety of environments?
- How can future embedded training systems be designed and employed to provide effective training?
- How can emerging technologies be leveraged to
- accelerate learning and improve effectiveness?
- incorporate lessons learned from operational environments?
- automate measurement and feedback, especially for complex tasks and collective performance?
